Every Student Deserves The Opportunity To Succeed

Academic qualifications

A range of qualifications are available in both core and vocational areas. English and Maths is a fundamental requirement which many young people struggle with for a variety of reasons. We use reliable assessment tools to ensure we gain a good understanding of any gaps and weaker areas. This includes a reading assessment tool enabling our tutors to provide appropriate delivery methods and differentiation of lessons, which in turn improves students’ confidence levels and therefore ensures higher achievement.

Reviewing progress

Using the results from students’ assessment data, academic targets are set with monthly reviews in each subject area. If targets are not achieved, a trigger will be implemented and detailed checks into attendance, time keeping and general changes in attitude. Both parent and school will be informed and a meeting scheduled, during which appropriate action will be taken.

Exams
Following initial assessment, a holistic program of study will be timetabled for each student. The program will outline the courses of study and the intended qualification targets. This may include on line exams, written exams, speaking and listening, controlled assessments and portfolio completion. Notifications for exams will be sent to students, schools and parents.

Results
All result information is transferred to the schools exams officer.

Work Experience

In a survey by the UK commission for employment and skills, 29% of employers stated that they believe it is critical for job applicants to have work experience. 45% of employers stated that they felt that it is significantly important that applicants had work experience. It is a known fact that lack of experience is the number one reason that employers turn away applicants. This is strong evidence that for employers, work experience is vital.

Below are details of the process of work experience.

  • Student is supported in identifying an appropriate sector
  • Work placements are sourced and pre placement checks completed
  • Students are then matched and taken for an interview with their support worker
  • During the interview an initial learning objective is set and a review date agreed
  • Placement is called on timetabled days to ensure that the student is present
  • Support worker attends for review with the employer and students, during which concerns and successes are discussed
  • The learning objective is assessed and if achieved a new objective is set. This ensures that student’s time at their placement is valuable
  • The employer feels supported by regular contact
  • Parents are updated at all times on progress
  • Relevant qualifications are achieved

Personal and Social Development

At the point of referral, all students are assigned a support worker to assist with their transition into alternative education. This person is there to support and guide them during every stage of their journey right from beginning to the end. The support worker will take students for their interviews, raise concerns with parents and other professional agencies as appropriate and ensure that the school is fully informed every step of the way. At the end of year 11 students will receive support on choices available to them for the future pathways.
